Description: Seal hooks were made to retrieve seals, shot with rifles, after the introduction of firearms into Alaska. In ealier years the toggle head harpoon, attached to a line held by the hunter, was sufficient to enable the hunter to bring the seal to shore, or to his kayak. When rifles became available it was necessary to utilize a hook such as this in order to retrieve the killed seal.
